Phenolics from Brazilian Propolis

چکیده
Propolis, or bee glue, is a complex resinous mix ture of plant-derived products collected and used by bees as a general purpose sealer and antibiotic in their hives. It is reported to exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activities, including antibac terial, antiviral, antiinflammatory, cytotoxic etc. (Marcucci, 1995). It is widely used in folk medicine and also as an ingredient in “herbal” preparations sold in pharmacies and “health food” stores in Western countries (Matsuda, 1994). The chemical composition of propolis is very complex (Mar cucci, 1995) and is dependent upon the source plant. Bud exudates of different poplar species are the main sources of bee glue in the temperate zone including Europe, Asia and North America (Greenaway et al., 1987; Wollenweber et al., 1987; Bankova et al., 1992). Samples originating from these regions are characterized by similar chemical composition; the most important constituents ap peared to be phenolics: flavonoids, aromatic acids and their esters (about 50% of the weight of prop olis) (Marcucci, 1995). In the last few years, tropi cal propolis has become a subject of increasing in terest, concerning its chemistry, origin and biological activity (Aga et al., 1994; Tomas-Barberan et al., 1993; Matsuno, 1994; Bankova et al., 1995). A brief review of the results published on the chemical composition of tropical bee glue

Seasonal variations of the chemical composition of Brazilian propolis
The seasonal variations in the chemical composition of Brazilian propolis, collected by two bee subspecies, Africanized Apis mellifera and European Apis mellifera ligustica, have been investigated by GC and GC-MS. The main components of the samples were phenolic compounds, especially cinnamic acid derivatives, the only exception being the autumn sample from Apis mellifera ligustica, where diter...
متن کاملBioactive Constituents of Brazilian Red Propolis
In a new propolis type, red Brazilian propolis, 14 compounds were identified (six of them new for propolis), among them simple phenolics, triterepenoids, isoflavonoids, prenylated benzophenones and a naphthoquinone epoxide (isolated for the first time from a natural source). Three of the major components demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity, and two (obtained as inseparable mixture) ...
متن کاملA Comparison between Characterization and Biological Properties of Brazilian Fresh and Aged Propolis
OBJECTIVE As propolis is a highly valued bee product, we aimed to verify the quality of aged propolis, investigating their phenolic and flavonoid composition, levels of toxic metals, radical scavenging and antimicrobial activities. MATERIAL AND METHODS Samples of fresh and aged propolis of six different beekeepers, from the same geographical location, were investigated in terms of their pheno...
متن کاملBrazilian Propolis Antileishmanial and Immunomodulatory Effects
The antileishmanial and immunomodulatory effects of propolis collected in Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil, were evaluated in Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis experimental infection. The antileishmanial effect of propolis on promastigote forms was verified by reducing growth and by promoting morphologic alterations observed by scanning electron microscopy. In in vitro immunomodulatory assays,...
متن کاملChemical Composition and Biological Activity of Extracts Obtained by Supercritical Extraction and Ethanolic Extraction of Brown, Green and Red Propolis Derived from Different Geographic Regions in Brazil.
The variations in the chemical composition, and consequently, on the biological activity of the propolis, are associated with its type and geographic origin. Considering this fact, this study evaluated propolis extracts obtained by supercritical extraction (SCO2) and ethanolic extraction (EtOH), in eight samples of different types of propolis (red, green and brown), collected from different reg...
